It's Spring, its's cool bananas

Hi Friends

It's Spring, it's cool bananas!

More about this a little later or skip and go to the next section to read on..but before that;

Have you watched this cutest video yet? Do yourself a favour and click on the button below. It’ll put a smile to your face.

In the modern world, this is called positive affirmation. In the yogic 5000 history world, it’s called a mantra.

Mantras are phrases of words and syllables recited over and again as an aid to concentration on a beneficial state of mind, in order to protect the mind from negative states. It could alter the brain in a sub-conscious level as you repeat.

In Yoga, we also work with intentions, Sankalpa. Setting intention will set the tone for the day or for the month, particularly in new moon, as we just passed on 28th October.

Intentions are different to goal setting. Goals are helpful way to obtain future outcome in the world and be an effective human being. Intentions are not oriented toward a future outcome. Instead, it is a path or practice that is focused on how you are "being" in the present moment. Your attention is on the ever present "now" in the constantly changing flow of life. You set your intentions based on understanding what matters most to you and make a commitment to align your worldly actions with your inner values. It exists without the need of an outcome.

Try setting an intention for each time you set on your Yoga mat. Or Would you set an intention for this month?

Let’s ground ourselves in or intentions today.

Home practice suggestion for this month

It's Spring, it's cool bananas!

It’s spring and according to Chinese medicine, it’s the Liver and Gallbladder organs and meridians which are active during this period. This means the imbalances can show up more so than the other times in the year.

Any irritation, frustration and anger are the emotional flavour of these organs so if you are feeling a little more irritated than usual for no apparent reasons, try out this stretch! BANANA!

Liver and GB is linked to muscles and tendons so any tightness or cramps in the muscles, you can try out these side stretches as well. But even if you don’t have these symptoms, how good it is to feel open on your sides. You’ll feel it in your hips and shoulders mainly but it’s the whole side that will lengthen including intercostal muscles, obliques and outer arms which is generally not opened often.

If you feel any tingling sensation as you keep your arms above head, it may be wise to bring it up (over your forehead) or simply down.

This Yin pose may give you a bit of a back arch so if you feel any pain and compression that doesn’t feel right, this is not for you. Or you can try to slide a towel underneath your lower back to support.

This is how to get in to banana pose.

  • Move both feet to the left side. You can hook the left-over right (like me) or other way round. Or stay unhooked.

  • Move your shoulders, neck and head to the left.Arms over head and check no tingling or uneasiness on your shoulders. You can place your arms/hands over cushion or towel to keep it higher off the ground.

  • You can use the left hand and hold on to right wrist to gently guide the top arm over head a little more.

  • Keep the lengthened side hip (Right side in the picture) down towards the floor.Stay for 2-5 minutes. Please time it so you don’t fall asleep.

  • Come out SLOWLY. Rest with your head, hips and legs in centre for 1-2 minutes before you move on to the second side.

  • Keep the attention to your body and if at any stage, there’s pain or discomfort, please come out.

  • Do the other side.

Happy practicing and stay bendy!
